The Tropecast #10: Guilty Pleasures

We all have something, hidden in the darkest parts of our hearts… or closets. Something in which we would not even tell our best friends or closest family members about. Perhaps you drive to out of town stores to buy merchandise of your particular guilty pleasure!

Adam Smithee, Alex Heberling, Rosscott, Mark Savary, and Micahel Dellheim are here to run this episode of The Tropecast, starting off with My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic!

I actually like several things that are generally regarded by people of a critical bent, as absolute crap. Which in turn makes me like them even more. Perhaps it is just that I like my entertainment with an extra serving of corn, but I love the live action Flash Gordon movie, the first Mortal Kombat movie, most Power Rangers shows, and I do have a thing for musicals old and new, so you can feed me anything from Gigi and My fair lady to, yes, High School Musical and Glee.

I have several guilty pleasures: Romance novels, bad old 80’s and 90’s cartoons, bad movies (I like lots of stuff that got terrible reviews by critics and viewers alike!). And alatriste, I am right there with you on the musicals- I love Glee far more than any sane person probably should. XD

Oh, and some of us aren’t just DRAWING our comic characters as ponies. http://lizstaley.deviantart.com/art/Adrastus-Pony-Details-187914766 (I am a special brand of crazy, yes.)

I too am a big pro wrestling fan. Although I usually only get to watch Smackdown due to my work hours, I keep up with Raw on the internet and try to do the same with Impact (although Impact is hard enough to keep up with while watching the show, let alone via results on the internet).

But I have a hard time calling that a “guilty pleasure” because I’m not ashamed of it. I’ve never hesitated to tell people I love wrestling and I’ve always been quick to defend it from all the senseless hate it attracts (especially from the MMA community, a lot of whom take a very elitist attitude towards wrestling).

As a side note, I’ve often thought that Professional Wrestling would be a wonderful topic for the Tropecast since it has such a huge list of tropes that it helped to create or popularize (not to mention how many tropes they’ve named). Just look at TV Tropes’ huge professional wrestling page: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ProfessionalWrestling

As for my own guilty pleasures, the only thing I can think of is how I used to be big into playing Yu-gi-oh (and honestly only stopped because I no longer had a ride to the place I played). But usually I have no problem admitting I like something most people don’t.
